Pentatonic-based Composition

Thursday, 21st October 2010

Today, during Music Theory, Mr John told us to compose a song based on one of the pentatonic scales. I chose the Javanese one (DO MI FA SOL SI). The song should be 16 bars. So after I've finished composing my song, Mr John checked it. He said it had to be more 'Javanese'. What does THAT mean?!

Pentatonic? What's That?

Tuesday, 19th October 2010

Today, in Music Theory, Mr John explained to us about pentatonic scales. At first, I didn't understand anything that he said. But after awhile, I knew what it was. A pentatonic scale is a scale consisting of 5 notes. (E.g. DO MI FA SOL SI) And it comes from the word "Penta". After learning about it, Mr John tested some of us to come up on the board and write the pentatonic scales he had shown earlier. He showed 3 examples; Chinese/Sundanese, Javanese, Japanese.

Booklet Done by Next Week?!

Thursday, 14th October 2010

Today, Mr John told us that a booklet about our group's theme (either Chinese, Japanese, Indian or Korean) must be done by next Tuesday. OK. WHAT?! I thought about it for awhile and then, I was okay with it. So, Mr Hary had to write all the requirements of the booklet on the board, so that we wouldn't forget what to research on. Finally, he wrote that:
  • 10-20 paged booklet
  • Contains Introduction/History
  • Famous Composers/Songs
  • Traditional Instruments
  • Spiral Binding and Nice Design

Singing Assessment

Tuesday, 12th October 2010

Today, in Music, Mr John announced our scores for the written test, because we didn't make it into average before. I wasn't really nervous because it isn't my first time. And hey, I can make mistakes. Anyway, I got 7/8, so... OK. That's good. I was satisfied! It was our singing assessment after that. I wasn't psyched because I studied before. BUT, I WAS NERVOUS BECAUSE IT WAS A SOLO. Oh well. But it turned out as partners... again! Like before! I decided to be with Tasia, and we chose to sing the Chinese song. After everyone was done singing, Mr John gave us our scores.

Tough Assessment Coming Up!

Thursday, 7th October 2010

Today, in Music Theory, we checked the previously done written test, but we didn't check ours. Instead, we jumbled the papers and took our friends'. The scores weren't that satisfying but it's cool. After we finished checking the papers, we practiced singing the song for the next assessment, which is, well, singing an Asian song. The songs were in Chinese, Korean, Indian and Japanese.

A Test, and a Foreign Song Altogether

Tuesday, 5th October 2010

Today, in Music, we did the WRITTEN TEST. Honestly, it wasn't that challenging (Really?). But as I thought, some of my classmates weren't ready yet. And I felt quite worried about that. Afterwards, we practiced a Chinese song for our next assessment. First, we studied the tune of the song. Then, we sung the song in English. Lastly, we (timidly) sung it for the last time in Chinese. It's HARD, I tell you!

Another Quick Review

Thursday, 30th September 2010

Today in Music Theory, Mr John announced that our written test was postponed to NEXT TUESDAY! Then, Mr John tested some of us on inversions and triads; they were told to write the given task on the board. Turns out, many of us wasn't ready. Good thing Mr John postponed the date, or most of us will get a bad score! And finally, we closed the session with another review on the topic.
